Overview of the Development Internship Program

The Global PACT Development Internship Program lasts one semester (Fall or Spring) and is based at our regional facility in Phrao, Thailand. Individuals who are interested can choose a concentration from a list of open positions at the Warm Heart Organization. Past positions include a wide assortment of jobs - just a few examples include landscape architect, nurse, public health program manager, and small business developer. For a current list of positions, visit the "Join" section of the Warm Heart website. After an exit exam, participants are awarded the highest level of Global PACT Activist Certification.

The Development Internship is unique opportunity to learn the theory and practice of community development under the supervision of Global PACT founder and Rutgers professor, D. Michael Shafer. Global PACT has partnered with a "first-of-its-kind" non-profit organization - Warm Heart Worldwide. Warm Heart is sets itself apart from other NGOs because it is self-sustaining, accepting donations as investments. Physically, it is a plot of land in a mountainous region in Northern Thailand that maintains the principle of sustainability by growing its own food (via aquaculture and agriculture) and producing its own energy via biodiesel generators. Warm Heart also has offices in the "oh-bo-tah" or regional government offices for Phrao where employees support the administrative side of the organization. Obtain detailed information about the Warm Heart organization by viewing this PDF.

Warm Heart is looking for independent and self-motivated individuals to act as project leaders. Interested persons should come prepared to develop their own project ideas after a personal assessment of Warm Heart, and certainly not expect to continually be given instructions. Implementation of a project requires an organization, so during the entire program you will be building the team which will be the engine of your ideas for change. There is no other way to learn how to build an effective team other than doing it. Participants will have to communicate, make decisions, and achieve a goal together with a diverse group of people. Not a program for the faint of heart.
